Scientists Develop A New Strategy to Study and Analyze Key Medical Components in Lingzhi
Date: 2018/11/23 Author: YAO Guohua

Chinese scientists applied a new method to study and analyze the key medical components in Ganoderma lucidum, or Lingzhi.

This work was done by HUANG Qing and his team with Institute of Technical Biology and Agriculture Engineering, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science and their new mothod was realized through the infrared (IR) and Raman spectra based on both experiments and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations.

Lingzhi contains many types of ganoderic acids (GAs) which are the major medical compounds in the mushroom, of which ganoderic acid A (GAA) is the most eye-catching one for its apparent antitumour activities on human cancer cells and it is also one of most abundant triterpenoids of Lingzhi.

Normally, GAs can be gained through extraction and chromatography from Lingzhi, and then the molecular structures of the GA types can be determined by the routine methods, which, however, are high-costing and time-consuming.

To target, HUANG’s team proposed a new method of applying the IR and Raman spectra based on both experiments and DFT calculations to study GAA.

In their work, taking GAA as an example, the vibration modes of Ganoderic acid were analyzed for the first time.

By comparing and analyzing the theoretical and experimental infrared and Raman spectra of many other types of GA, they found that the employment of both IR and Raman spectra in some certain region could efficiently distinguish different GAs types.

What’s more, the strong IR and Raman bands at about 1608 cm-1 can be used to distinguish GAA and its derivative property.

This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
