Key Laboratory of Environmental Optics & Technology

Research orientations & contents:
1). Applied basic research on environmental optics. This includes optical remote sensing of ambient air pollution and the photo-chemical reaction mechanism of the pollutants; detection of the atmospheric trace gases by spectroscopy measured on board the aircraft and balloon; studies on a regional pollutant’s spatial or temporal characteristics, complexity and related key chemical or physical processes; aerosol physics and quantitative characterization of carbon black’s aerosol; establishment of a data bank on the spectral characteristics of main pollutants and the research of characteristics of the targeted environment and propagation of the air irradiation.

2). New methods for quantitative supervision, including core technologies of special-use sensors aboard orbiting satellites and application of their systems; laser detection used for spatial or temporal identification of air pollutants; the on-line operation of optical and mass spectroscopy for measurement of organic pollutants in the form of aerosol and trace components; methods and modeling research of interdisciplinary surveys on regional (river catchment) pollution.

3). Hi-tech and systematic integration of environmental supervision: The research on monotoring sub-stations on urban air quality and on-line supervision of polluting sources; on-line supervision of a water body’s water quality and polluting sources; the 2D or 3D monitoring systems and related technology against regional pollution; the detection technology for a coal mine’s gas leakage, contaminants and industrial processes.

Existing build-up in its infrastructure: Various opto-environmental means for high-speed, real-time and on-line detection have been adopted in supervision of the pollution in air, water and soil, probing the complicated air pollution and hydrological setting in a given region. Representative results: the development of the DOAS technology and system for supervising air pollution, on-line monitoring system on smog discharge, a laser-induced detection system of fluorescence for water bodies etc. The Lab so far has won prizes from the National or Provincial Awards for S&T Progress on the environment and saved hundreds of million yuan of foreign exchange in replacement of the imported foreign sophisticated devices. The permanent staff of the Lab has 12 employees, including three accepted by the CAS-hosted Bairen Program.

Developmental targets: Oriented by the demands posed by the national strategy on environmental safety, the Lab carries out various research projects in applied basic research and hi-tech innovation by gearing up its operation towards the global frontiers of the environmental science. In a bid to promote the country’s sustainable development and theharmony between economic growth and society and between man and nature, the Lab plans to develop itself into a

innovation source of the country’s environmental
supervision and related hi-tech development, a talent incubator and up-to=date research base noted for its international renown, domestic influence and clear-cut characteristics.
