Chinese Scientists Develop Online Monitoring Instruments for Ocean Environmental Safety
Date: 2019/09/05 Author: YIN Gaofang, CHEN Zhenyi

Chinese scientists have developed an online system to monitor marine-biochemical elements, according to Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, who led the project.

The research team developed the online monitoring instruments by integrating three measurement modules namely, the chlorophyll module, productivity module and dissolved oxygen module, which are all developed by the team itself.

At the very recent, the instrument was installed in China Maritime Surveillance "101" ship which made a twelve-day sail in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea in August with a total voyage of 806 nautical miles.

After the sailing, the monitoring system has collected more than 9,200 profiles of data, connected to algae community structure, chlorophyll concentration, primary productivity, dissolved oxygen, as well as the distribution characteristics of biological elements in typical sea areas.

The newly developed system may provide a help hand for marine ecological environment quality assessment, fishery resources assessment, early warning of algal blooms and red tide disasters and then to assist study in ocean environmental safety.

This work was supported by the National Key R&D Program of China "Marine Environment Safety".
