On April 26th, 2012, Shawna Williams, a reporter for Science magazine, visited Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CASHIPS), and had interviews with Prof. KUANG Guangli and Prof. LI Jiangang, respectively.
The interview with Dr. KUANG Guangli was held in High Magnetic Field Laboratory (CHMFL). Dr. KUANG, who is also the director of CHMFL, gave an overview on The Steady High Magnetic Field Facilities (SHMFF) project. The SHMFF facilities will contain a 40T hybrid magnet and a series of water-cooled or superconducting magnets, providing a research platform for various multidisciplinary studies at high magnetic fields. Upon completion in 2013, HMFL will become one of the best equipped magnetic facilities around the world. Up to date, several magnetic field instruments and measuring systems have been put into operation and opened to users from China and abroad. When asked how he thinks about Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS), Dr. KUANG noted, he has been in CAS for last 30 years since his graduate study, and he enjoyed working in this harmonious big family with a rich academic atmosphere.
In EAST General Control Room, Dr. LI Jiangang, the director of Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP), answered Ms. Williams interview questions such as “the goal of nuclear fusion research” and “when the fusion energy can be commercialized”. With strong supports from Chinese Academy of Sciences and other state funding agencies, HT-6M, HT-7, EAST and many other sets of experimental fusion devices have been built in IPP over the years. National leaders inspected EAST tokamak continually in these years. The successful built up and operation of EAST provided a valuable experience for the construction of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project -- a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. Dr. LI emphasized that, IPP will continue to contribute to fusion research by training more young talents and cooperating with other institutes home and abroad to get a win-win success.
Ms. Williams, accompanied by Mr. An Jianji, the vice director of Bureau of International Co-operation, CAS and Ms. Wu Ruoxi, the vice head of International Affairs& Operation Department of Science Magzine, also visited SHMFF facilities, EAST tokamak and ITER CICC Hall.
