The first Coordinators’ Meeting for Asia 3 Foresight Program of Studies on Key Issues of High Performance Plasma Sustainment, in short, A3 program, was held at end of August in Jesu Island, Korea, indicating the official startup of China-Japan-Korea (A3) foresight cooperation on plasma physics. Twenty three participants from National Institute of Fusion Science (NIFS), Japan, National Fusion Research Institute (NFRI), Korea and ASIPP attended the meeting to set the roadmap for this five-year, 12 million-Yuan program. ASIPP, NIFS and NFRI have attached great importance to A3 program, directors from three institutions participated in the meeting. After NFRI president Prof Myeun Kwon’s welcome speech, Prof Jiangang Li congratulated the seated on the successful application of the A3 program; he said that our three countries home the world’s three superconducting fusion device, and have a strong cooperation base. There is great potential for R&D reciprocity, the fusion world will “look east” in future. NIFS director Prof Akio Komori thanked the efforts of key persons and management staff, and he promised more support for A3 program, and wished three parties a happy and successful cooperation. During the meeting, three keys, Prof Liqun Hu, Prof Shigeru MORITA and Dr Yeong-Kook OH introduced the current status of fusion researches in each country. Three major subjects are underlined, they are: current drive and cross-section control, edge and divertor plasma control, high energy particle and plasma interaction. Three parties are eye to eye on management process, budget expenditure, workshops and young buds’ education. Besides, three institutes will set up a joint fund to support graduate student cultivation. The next coordinators’ meeting will be held in Japan. A3 program is jointly funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NFFC), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and National Research Foundation of Korea (NFR), who only support two projects a year. In January ASIPP, NIFS and NFRI submitted their application separately to their agencies respectively, after strict screening and evaluation in country and among countries, the project “Studies on Key Issues of High Performance Plasma Sustainment” was approved in July.
