Dr. V. Igochine, a young researcher from Max-Planck Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP), gave two seminars during his recent visit to ASIPP. His seminars were well-attended by young PhD students, some of them hailed his talks “instructive” and “enlightening” on their future experiments and study.

In his lecture “Sawtooth instability in ASDEX Upgrade”, Dr Igochine discussed Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics (MHD) instabilities of tokamak experiments, and introduced the “Stochastic Reconnection Model” which could explain the fast sawtooth instability crash in ASDEX-U Tokamak.

In the second presentation “Introduction To Plasma Stability And Plasma Instabilities”, Dr. Igochine illustrated the idea kink mode and resistive kink mode by the displacement shift function identified from experiments. He also identified the neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) in experiments from the tearing modes. During the discussion, he proposed several kinds of methods on the control of the most dangerous NTM which may appear in EAST.

It is at the ASIPP invitation that Dr Igochine visited the institute from March 21-27, 2011
