The Sino-Japan Core-University Program (CUP) on Plasma and Nuclear Fusion, hosted by Japan's National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) and the CAS Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP), has passed the mid-term assessment by Japan Society for Promotion of Science with a straight A, getting the green light to go ahead for another five years. As a result, its budget would be increased on the basis of current 270 million Japanese Yen a year.
Since the implementation of CUP program in 2001, with NIFS and ASIPP acting the "core" roles, nearly 60 universities and institutions in China and Japan have been involved in the program with 5,800 person-day exchange in the form of scientific visits, joint experiments, seminars/workshops, and international conferences. About 380 papers have been either published in journals or presented in international conferences. A number of joint papers have been published in such world-famous journals as Nature, Physics Review Letter.
Now two hosting institutes have already finished the drafting of the 2006 CUP implementation plan, and are confident of its success in the next five years.(Li Jiangang reports.)
