The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI), developed by Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS), passed test on January 18, 2022. It will be loaded on GaoFen-5(01A), a hyperspectral comprehensive observation satellite.
EMI is a space-borne nadir-viewing wide-field imaging spectrometer, which is used to obtain global distribution of tropospheric and stratospheric trace gases (e.g., NO2, O3, HCHO, and SO2) at high spatial and spectral resolution.
EMI contains four grating spectrometers, covering wavelengths in the range of 240–710 nm with a spectral resolution of 0.6 nm, and enables one-day global coverage.
It's designed to conduct demonstrations of hyperspectral remote sensing monitoring applications such as polluting gases monitoring, regional ambient air quality measurement, atmospheric composition identification, and climate change analysis for national pollution reduction and environmental quality supervision.
