Dr. LIN Xinhua from HFIPS participated in the Arctic manned deep-diving mission aboard Tansuo-3, the world’s first polar-capable manned submersible mothership independently designed and built by China.
After 98 days at sea and more than 15,000 nautical miles of voyage, the expedition team successfully returned to Sanya on October 27.
The mission achieved several remarkable breakthroughs. The Fendouzhe submersible completed 43 dives in the Arctic and, together with Jiaolong, accomplished China’s first dual manned submersible operation beneath the Arctic ice. For the first time internationally, a manned deep dive was conducted at the Gakkel Ridge, reaching a maximum depth of 5,277 meters. The mission also established a new “ship-submersible coordination” model and demonstrated outstanding performance under polar conditions.
As part of China’s 15th Arctic Scientific Expedition, the mission successfully carried out continuous manned deep-sea operations in the Arctic’s dense sea-ice regions, marking a significant step forward in polar research capabilities.
