My name is Benjamin Moshref. I am an Italian student of Iranian origin, and I graduated in Physics from Sapienza University of Rome.
I had never visited China before, and this summer program provided me with a perfect opportunity to experience the country. After completing the program, I plan to travel around China and explore more of its culture. So far, I can say that Chinese people are among the kindest and most welcoming people I have ever met. Although communication can sometimes be challenging if you do not speak Chinese, people are always willing to help once they understand what you need.
During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong interest in theoretical physics. However, I did not want to focus on a field that was purely abstract. I hoped to work on a subject that could bring tangible benefits to people's everyday lives. This is what attracted me to plasma physics, as advances in this field could pave the way for fusion energy and potentially transform the future of human society.
My master’s thesis supervisor previously worked on a project related to EAST, and he told me that the future of fusion research lies in China. Following his advice, I applied for the FuSEP program, and my experience here has confirmed his words.
The approach to fusion research in China is different from what I have experienced in Europe. Here, I was deeply impressed by the speed at which large-scale facilities are developed and operated, allowing researchers to address practical scientific challenges through experiments and continuous improvement.
On my first day on Science Island, after visiting EAST, I immediately realized that this place has a unique atmosphere for fusion research. The scale of these projects, the efficiency of their implementation, and the attention paid to every detail deeply impressed me. Even aspects such as reactor design and space utilization have been carefully considered. I would be very interested in having the opportunity to continue working here for a longer period.
During the FuSEP program, I focused on runaway electrons and their experimental identification in EAST discharges. Although my main interest lies in theoretical modelling and analysis, I believe that understanding experimental processes is essential. Every theoretical development is built upon experimental observations, and the ability to interpret experimental data is a crucial step in becoming a successful theoretical physicist.
Runaway electrons are extremely energetic particles that can escape magnetic confinement in fusion devices. Interestingly, I became fascinated by them partly because I also tend to “run away” when I speak — I talk very fast! This habit even led me to develop a passion for rap music. I can sing many Eminem songs, including Rap God, which is known for its extremely fast lyrics.
Looking ahead, I may apply for a PhD position in China after returning to Italy. I hope to further deepen my theoretical understanding of runaway electrons and fusion plasma physics.
