Three Satellite Payloads Ready for China's First Atmospheric Monitoring Satellite

Apr 12, 2021 | By ZHAO Weiwei

Recently, directional polarimetric camera (DPC-II) made by Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) passed its final test by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) and ready to be loaded on Daqi-1, China's first atmospheric monitoring satellite.

Till now, AIOFM has successfully developed three satellite payloads, which will help Daqi-1 to comprehensively monitor the atmospheric environment.

The other two are Atmospheric trace gas differential absorption spectrometer (or EMI-II) and the Particulate Observing Scanning Polarization (POSP) which passed the evaluation test last year.

DPC-II is the second satellite-borne sensor developed by AIOFM. It’s designed to detect the characterization of atmospheric aerosols and clouds with high accuracy. It forms the “Polarization Cross-Fire Suite” with POSP, a cross-track scanning polarimeter with highly accurate polarization measurements of bands from near-UV to SWIR (410-2250 nm).

EMI-II is used to obtain hyperspectral remote sensing products from ultraviolet to visible band, and then to quantitatively monitor distribution and change of global atmospheric components. It will set a pilot application of hyperspectral remote sensing measurement in terms of monitoring pollution gas, regional air quality, and atmospheric composition.

Daqi-1 is developed to monitor fine particle pollution like PM2.5, pollutant gases including nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone, as well as carbon dioxide concentration. It combines both passive and active sensing, which can realize comprehensive monitoring of the atmospheric environment in a better way. Thanks to the passive and active sensing loaded on it, the detection accuracy of fine particles and carbon dioxide column concentration will reach the international advanced level.
