April 19 marks the arrival of Grain Rain (Guyu), the sixth of China’s 24 solar terms. As the last term of spring, it signals increased rainfall crucial for the growth of crops. Farmers across China embrace this time as “rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains.”
The ancient poet Du Fu once wrote, “The season of Grain Rain brings forth fine drizzles, moistening all things in silence.” This beautifully captures the gentle yet powerful transformation nature undergoes.
Tea picking in southern China also peaks during this time, as leaves harvested around Guyu are prized for their freshness.
Beyond agriculture, Grain Rain reflects harmony between humans and nature — a time to sow, reflect, and grow.
As the rains fall, they not only nurture the earth but also remind us to cultivate patience and hope in our own lives.
