First Debut of 240 MeV Superconducting Proton Cyclotron Celebrated in Hefei

Feb 06, 2023 | By ZHAO Weiwei; XING Yixiang

A 240 MeV Superconducting Proton Cyclotron, made its first debut recently in Hefei, which is expected to help more tumor patients. It's the application of one of spin-off technologies from superconducting EAST Tokamak of ASIPP, HFIPS.

This Proton Cyclotron, which successfully achieved beam extraction, was developed by Hefei CAS Ion Medical and Technical Devices Co., Ltd (HFCIM), a joint venture of ASIPP, HFIPS with Hefei City.

The cyclotron provided higher energy and current to create full coverage of proton radiation therapy for tumors. Also, it was able to meet technological needs of FLASH therapy.

It marked another technological breakthrough of domestic medical superconducting proton cyclotron, according to the research team.

The new medical superconducting proton cyclotron was developed from SC200 superconducting proton cyclotron, which was self-developed and manufactured by HFCIM and had been operated stably for over 2 years.
