Minor Heat (Xiaoshu) Arrives, Marking the Start of Midsummer Heat

Jul 11, 2025 | By

Xiaoshu, or "Minor Heat," is the 11th of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. It signals the beginning of midsummer, when temperatures start to rise significantly, especially in southern China.

Though called "minor," the heat can be intense in many regions. Crops like rice, corn, and cotton enter a critical growth stage, making it an important time for agricultural care. People also begin traditional practices to stay cool and healthy—such as eating cooling foods like mung bean soup and enjoying seasonal fruits.

As the days grow hotter, Xiaoshu reminds us to stay hydrated, take precautions against heatstroke, and embrace the rhythm of summer.
