Dr. Andrea M. Garofalo, sciences manager in General Atomics and leader of the joint DIII-D/EAST Task Force, won the 2020 Anhui Science and Technology Cooperation Award, as one of two recipients among international scientists.
For the award he received, Dr. Andrea M. Garofalo expressed his happiness and gratitude in e-mail. “It has been of great pleasure to work with Chinese scientists”.
His collaboration with scientists on science island, Hefei, Anhui, China can be traced back to 2013, the first year he was appointed as sciences manager of General Atomics, when he co-leaded the US-China “international collaboration center for Tokamak Energy Development”. He came to Hefei Institutes of Physical Science several times each year since then and developed close relationship with many talented scientists and engineers in Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP), Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS).
In 2015, the joint DIII-D/EAST Task Force was established. As deputy-leader of one of the DIII-D research task forces, he has been acting as a good coordinator with ASIPP, offering researching opportunities for both countries. Thanks to his earnest involvement, the Joint DIII-D/EAST Scenario was held every two years, aiming at demonstration of stable confinement of plasma pressure at nearly double the conventional free-boundary stability limit in a tokamak.
In 2017, “New Physics Understanding Provides Attractive Path for Developing Fusion Energy via a Steady-State Tokamak” project was highlighted by the US Department of Energy (DOE).
By 2020, he has published more than 100 papers on plasma physics. Among them, many demonstrated the research result of international collaboration (esp with ASIPP) on the application of static magnetic fields, fusion energy etc., which is also outcome of long-term friendship of two sides.
Born in 1965, Dr. Andrea M. Garofalo is one of the most distinguished scientists in the fields of applied physics. He was granted visiting professorship by Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2014 to 2015. The awards he received include APS Fellowship in 2009, John Dawson Award for Excellence In Plasma Physics Research in 2007.

The hometown of Dr. Andrea M. Garofalo is in Caltanissetta, a beautiful city in the mountains west of the Salso River in Italy. In 1990, he received his Laurea degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy. Seven years later, he received his Ph.D. from the Applied Physics Department at Columbia University in New York, with a thesis based on experimental work on the High Beta Tokamak. Since completing his graduate work, Dr. Garofalo has been a research scientist for Columbia University, carrying out MHD stability research on the DIII-D Tokamak National Fusion Facility at General Atomics, in San Diego.
